How Over App made me over the moon with an Instagood feature

The first time I discovered Over App I was staying at my mums. I had blocked drains at home so was unable to shower. It was an emergency situation. I love my Mum, but she likes to talk, a lot and Instagram was a great distraction. I noticed someone on my feed had done some clever business adding type over her image using Over App. I know adding type to images isn’t anything new, but on checking out the app I was impressed by the selection of cool fonts. They had also established the hashtag #madewithover which was attracting some outstanding pictures, so I was up for this particular challenge.

As a designer I think I know a bit about typography, so I found the app limiting in lots of ways. You can only produce one line of a chosen typeface at one time. You then have to save the image, re-import and do the next line of copy whilst trying to line everything up with the functional parts of the app getting in the way, making it hard to see what you are actually doing. However as with everything in life, these limitations make for some extraordinary creative executions. Check out the #madewithover hashtag to see what I mean. My example is really simple. Let me take you through the stages I used to create it.

I feel especially grateful to Over App as it was this image that @instagood took a shine to and posted on their feed with magic words “@nicedg your photos are #instagood”. At the time it felt like I had won an Oscar. If you are a serious Iger you will know how cool this is. It also led to a flurry of #madewithover posts around the mark-making* office. Check out @swturn3r @mkmkrshannon @kasia_piekut’s Instagram feed for some inspiring examples.

Have a go for yourself and keep me updated by tagging @nicedg in your post. I would love to see how you get on and what your thoughts are about this app.
